A Summer That Changes Lives

Follow Ian McHale's MEDLIFE internship in Lima as he raises funds for Jorge's ramp and builds a school in Tanzania.

Halfway Through, Already Changed

Ian McHale arrived in Lima six weeks ago as a MEDLIFE Volunteer Affairs Intern, halfway through a summer that's already reshaping how he sees medicine and community. A Biology major from the University of Vermont with a minor in Community & International Development, Ian has spent the last three years building toward this moment—from joining MEDLIFE as a freshman, to leading his chapter as president, to now designing programs that will reach thousands of students worldwide. This week alone, he's witnessed the power of listening: identifying a patient's need, mobilizing his peers, and raising $800 in under seven hours to build a ramp for Jorge, a man whose mobility had confined him to his home. That's the work of the next six weeks ahead.

Ian and fellow interns accompanied a nurse to Jorge's home, bringing medical care and human connection to a man whose rare genetic disease keeps him largely confined indoors.

The intern team raised $800 in under 7 hours—exceeding their $700 goal—to build Jorge an accessibility ramp so he could finally leave and enter his home with ease.

Planning Global Change

Planning Global Change

In the MEDLIFE office, Ian developed a Fall Fundraiser for a rural school in Kirua, Tanzania that will reach over 160 student chapters and thousands of students worldwide.

Building a Future in Kirua

Kirua is a rural agricultural community nestled in the Kilimanjaro region of Tanzania, where there are no paved roads and villagers must hike many kilometers to reach public transit and access to a major town. The primary school serves 120 children in a simple room with no bathrooms, water, or electricity. Many children work on the ground because there aren't enough desks. This summer, Ian and his fellow interns are raising funds for three critical projects: a dining hall, a kitchen, and bathrooms. MEDLIFE is also donating 29 desks and chairs so every child has a place to learn. When the community told us what they needed most, we listened. Now we're building it.

Ian's Path to Leadership

Ian's journey with MEDLIFE began as a freshman at the University of Vermont, when he joined his local chapter. That first summer, a brigade to Cusco, Peru changed everything. By sophomore year, he'd become Vice President and Brigades Officer, then traveled to Esmeraldas, Ecuador on his second brigade—where he first learned about the Lima internship opportunity. As a junior, he stepped into the role of chapter President. Today, as a MEDLIFE Volunteer Affairs Intern, Ian mentors two students, volunteers on the pediatric floor at UVM Medical Center, leads MEDVIDA as its president, and finds time to pursue his passions: hiking, snowboarding, camping, and competing with the UVM Triathlon club. His goal for this internship is to connect his Biology major and Community and International Development minor through sustainable community development projects that bring medical access to vulnerable communities.
