A Summer That Changes Everything

Ian's volunteer journey in Lima shows how Yampu travelers give back to the communities they visit.

Ian's Summer of Impact

Ian arrived in Lima as a MEDLIFE Volunteer Affairs Intern, sponsored by Yampu as part of our Give Back Initiative. Over nine weeks, he's worked alongside local communities to build staircases, construct ramps, and create lasting infrastructure that brings medical access and dignity to vulnerable neighborhoods. This week, he finished Jorge's ramp—a project that raised $700 in seven hours and transformed one family's home. The work is tangible. The impact is real.

Work That Builds Community

The heart of this internship lives in the field. Two weeks of effort culminated in finishing the staircase project—a transformation that opened new pathways through the community. That same week, Ian and the team completed and inaugurated Jorge's ramp, a project that raised $700 in seven hours through the collective effort of interns, volunteers, and neighbors working side by side. What began as identifying a need became a solution, then a celebration. With momentum building, they started another staircase project in the same community, this time with even more participation—a visible shift from earlier weeks when the team was smaller. This is what sustainable development looks like: not outsiders arriving with answers, but a community discovering its own capacity to build.

Ian's Journey

Biology & Community

Ian studies Biology at the University of Vermont with a minor in Community & International Development. His goal for this internship is to connect his academic foundation with real-world impact, helping plan and implement sustainable community development projects that bring medical access to vulnerable communities.

From Brigades to Leadership

His first brigade to Cusco, Peru during freshman year changed his life. Since then, he's served as Vice President and Brigades Officer, traveled to Esmeraldas, Ecuador, and now leads as President of MEDVIDA, his local MEDLIFE chapter at UVM.

Beyond the Classroom

Ian mentors two students, volunteers at the University of Vermont Medical Center's pediatric floor, and stays active with the UVM Triathlon club. He brings the same commitment to outdoor pursuits—hiking, snowboarding, and camping—that he brings to his work in the field.
