Maggie Goes to Peru

A Yampu Tour Consultant's firsthand journey through the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, and beyond.

Arrival and Acclimation

Maggie's journey began with a flight into Lima, followed by a connection to Cusco, where the real adventure would unfold. The drastic change in altitude demanded respect—her first night was spent at leisure, allowing her body to rest and acclimate to the thin mountain air. This pause before exploration is essential, setting the stage for everything that follows in the Sacred Valley and beyond.

Explore the Sacred Valley on Your Terms

At Explora lodge, excursions are built around you. Horseback riding, bicycling, hiking—each outing comes in varying difficulty levels, so whether you're seeking a gentle morning ride through mountain villages or a challenging all-day trek, there's a path waiting. During her stay, Maggie ventured to Salineras de Maras, the ancient Incan salt mines still in operation after centuries. The terraced pools stretch across the mountainside in shades of white and rust, and the salt harvested here is extraordinary—the kind of gift that carries a story home with it. It is like nothing you've ever seen before.

The Hike That Changes Everything

The next day I got to do the iconic hike up Machu Picchu and private tours of the ruins. Travelers also have the option of adding on a hike to Huayna Picchu. Afterwards, I got to enjoy lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge. This is one experience that world travelers should not miss, and a definite highlight of Peru. For those who are unable to make the trek physically, there are a lot of other alternative options that will allow you to enjoy the majesty of Machu Picchu without climbing all those steps.
