Twenty Years of Authentic Travel

Meet Jose Irauzqui, President and Co-founder of Yampu Tours, whose passion for Peru's magic has shaped every experience we create.

A Life in Motion

Born in Peru, José traveled from a young age with his parents around Latin America, then attended boarding school in Switzerland and explored Europe and Asia extensively. After earning a law degree in the UK in 1990, he returned to Peru until 1998, when a chance meeting in New York changed everything. That's where he met Monica, his future wife and Yampu co-founder. Their first trip together was to Machu Picchu—a life-changing experience that sparked a vision. Shortly after, José and Monica married, moved to New York City, and began building Yampu Tours.

The Man Behind the Magic

Jose's childhood in Peru shaped everything that followed. Restless by nature—his mother's word for it—he grew up traveling across Latin America with his parents, boarding in Switzerland, and exploring Europe and Asia. He dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. Instead, he found his calling in something equally rooted in care: creating travel experiences that honor both the places and the people who call them home. Today, that restlessness has become intentionality. He breaks his workday into pieces, stepping away for a few hours to be fully present with family, and he guards his weekends fiercely—less connected, more alive. It's the same philosophy he brings to Yampu: travel should feel unhurried, authentic, and deeply human.
